A Typical Day at ACE
A complete list of the classes offered this summer can be found here
Morning
8:30 Wake Up/Breakfast
You wake up, shower, dress, and head to the campus dining hall for a full hot breakfast (or just cereal and juice, if you’d prefer). After breakfast, you have a few minutes to look over your notes before your first class of the day.
9:30 First Period
Your day starts in the classroom where you learn about a Quizbowl topic of your choosing (for more information about classes, click here). Each class starts with a quiz on the previous day’s material, with your overall quiz average factoring into your seeding for the final day’s subject-area individual tournament (for more information about the subject area competition, click here).
10:30 Break
Between first and second periods you get 15 minutes to hang out, get a drink, have a snack, and find out who is in your afternoon practice group.
10:45 Second Period – Practice!
Second period is an “on the buzzer” practice session for everyone. Based on how you performed on the initial camp placement test and in previous practice sessions, we place you in practice groups where you play against other players of roughly the same skill level. We tally the scores and use the data to place you in tomorrow’s practice group and tonight’s tournament.
11:45 Lunch/Break
After second period it’s off to the dining hall for lunch. Selection varies by location, but all dining halls include a variety of options including hot meals, sandwiches, pizza, salad bar, and vegetarian entrees. After you eat, you have a bit of down time where you can nap, play Frisbee, read, listen to music, or study before your second quiz of the day.
Afternoon
1:00 Third Period
Here you take the second of your classes.
In place of one of your lecture classes, you might choose to take a subject-specific buzzer practice in this slot (for more information about classes, click here).
2:00 Break
Between third and fourth periods you get 15 minutes to hang out, get a drink, have a snack, and find out who is in your afternoon practice group.
2:15 Fourth Period – Practice!
Fourth period is another “on the buzzer” practice session for everyone. Based on how you performed on the initial camp placement test and in previous practice sessions, we place you in practice groups where you play against other players of roughly the same skill level. We tally the scores and use the data to place you in tomorrow’s practice group and tonight’s tournament.
3:15 Break
Between fourth and fifth periods you get 15 minutes to hang out, get a drink, have a snack, or maybe do some last minute studying before your final quiz of the day.
3:30 Fifth Period
Here you take the third of your classes.
In place of one of your lecture classes, you might choose to take a subject-specific buzzer practice in this slot (for more information about classes, click here).
4:30 Afternoon Break/Dinner
In the afternoon, you have free time to rest, relax, study, read, whatever. Many campers use this time for pick-up basketball games, Frisbee, video games, etc. Special optional activities, including staff challenge matches or campus tours are also available. After dinner, you make your way the headquarters building and find out what team you’re on for the evening’s tournament.
Evening
7:00 Tournament
Each evening concludes with a tournament. Each tournament has three divisions (upper, middle, and lower) divided by skill level. We place you in a division based on a variety of factors, including your performance on the initial camp placement tests and your performance in the daily practice sessions.
Within each division, you play a series of preliminary matches followed by a championship match.
9:45 Awards/Announcements
At the conclusion of the evening tournament, you meet back in the auditorium for awards. We recognize and award prizes to the winning teams from each of the three divisions as well as those who performed well on their quizzes. After a few general announcements, you return to your dorm where you can hang out, watch a movie, play games, or study for tomorrow’s quizzes.
12:00 Lights Out
Lights out at midnight.

The week at camp culminates in our most prestigious tournament of the week (with the best prizes) - the subject area tournament. This is an individual competition where campers get to face off to see whose knowledge is the deepest in one of three subject areas (literature, science, and history/social studies). Because we want to encourage campers to learn as much as they can in their classes, we handicap the campers for this final tournament based on their quiz averages over the week. Study hard in your classes, and you can enter the tournament with up to a 5 question advantage.
